Gala - This sweet flavored and crisp textured apple kicks off the fall
harvest season. In between the "end of summer"
activities you have planned, enjoy a casual drive out to the farm, pick some
Gala, and then stop by our retail sales tent for the last of our juicy
tree-ripened peaches.
Please allow us to toot our own horn. In 1995 Mitch Lynd was selected as
Apple Grower of the Year for the entire United States.
|
Honeycrisp - This is perhaps the most highly anticipated variety our customers look forward to picking each fall - and for good reason. It is one of the first apples to herald the beginning of the fall harvest season and its sweet flavor coupled with its explosive texture have been aptly described as "a party in your mouth". Developed at the University of Minnesota as a cross of Macoun x Honeygold and introduced in 1974.
|
McIntosh - A New England favorite discovered by John McIntosh in Ontario, Canada in 1796. This highly aromatic variety is thin skinned, spicy, very juicy and tends to be more tart than sweet.
|
Redcort - An excellent sweet/tart eating apple that retains its snow-white flesh color when cut making it the best choice for salads.
|
Jonathon - There's little chance that a freshly baked apple pie is going to last long in the kitchen, but make it using Jonathon apples and watch it fly! A Lynd family favorite for generations, this medium-sized tart flavored apple retains its shape well when cooked and is truly outstanding for baking and sauce. Discovered in 1826 at Woodstock, New York.
|
Jonagold - A cross between two American favorites, Jonathon and Golden Delicious, this apple delivers when it cames to classic apple flavor! Little (if any) sugar is needed in cooking. Tip: while this is a fantastic multipurpose apple, buy only as many as you can use by Thanksgiving, as it is not a long keeper.
|
Golden Delicious - Another outstaying antique variety that has been favored
for generations. Its sweet flavor and versatility in the kitchen make it an
American classic. Discovered in West Virginia in 1890.
|
Red Delicious - We grow this variety because the grocery stores demand it,
but we don't recommend it to our pick your own customers. While it is a
good eating apple, almost all varieties surpass it. For all other purposes
it is rated fair or poor.
|
Adam's Pearmain - An outstanding russet discovered in England in 1826. It
displays beautiful earthtone hues of red and yellow beneath heavily
lenticeled skin making it a very attractive apple. It possesses a distinct
nutty flavor and is richly aromatic. It is available only in the retail
sales tent as it is grown at our Sportsman Club Road orchard location. It
usually ripens during the latter half of September.
|
Rome - This apple has Ohio roots and is popular as a good all-purpose variety. It has a thick red skin and slightly tart flesh and is primarily used for cooking, especially baking and sauteeing. Donšt be surprised if some of the apples you bite into have red-tinged flesh, a natural trait that is unique to Romes. Tip: if you choose to bake with Romes add a little lemon juice for tartness.
|
Melrose - Designated Ohio's state apple, Melrose was developed at OSU in
1938 as a cross between Jonathon and Red Delicious. A large red apple with
prominent lenticels on the skin. They are picked at the same time as
Suncrisp, so be sure to combine both varieties into the same bag for great
apple taste that will store well into the winter months. Tip: Be sure to
try a jar of our Cinnamon Melrose Apple Sauce, available in our retail sales
tent and online store.
|
Suncrisp - News anchor Cabot Rea introduced our Suncrisp apples to Central
Ohioans several years ago during an evening NBC news broadcast. He took one
bite, exclaimed its virtues and consequently propelled it into the top
position as our most demanded apple variety. One bite and you'll realize
that this is one time when it's good advice to follow the crowd!
|
Fuji - Very firm, juicy flesh and high sugar content crown Fuji as king of the sweet apples at our farm! An excellent fresh eating apple that stores extremely well. Fuji originated in Japan and is a cross between two American varieties, Ralls Janet and Red Delicious.
|
Winesap - This is an old-time American classic and is known to be an
outstanding keeper. Winesap's distinct rich flavor just gets better with
age. Try some for yourself and discover the apple eating experience your
grandparents enjoyed during the long winter months.
|
Goldrush - Chances are good that if you prefer a tart apple you'll consider
Goldrush a real gem! Very firm and very tart right off the tree, Goldrush
develops an excellent balance of sweet and tart when stored into the winter
months. It is our latest ripening variety and is an outstanding keeper.
